Black Tourmaline, also known as Schorl, is a crystalline boron silicate mineral. It naturally forms with distinctive striations and can contain fractures, fissures and variations throughout the material. As Black Tourmaline is relatively brittle, spheres may be stabilised during the polishing process, with small areas of resin filling occasionally visible where fragile sections have been strengthened. This is part of the finishing process rather than damage to the piece.
