Both minerals are secondary copper minerals, forming as copper deposits are altered through oxidation and interaction with mineral-rich groundwater. The copper-rich mining regions of the Congo are particularly well known for producing striking associations of Chrysocolla and Malachite together, sometimes forming botryoidal surfaces, sparkling druzy coatings and small crystal growths across the matrix. The variation in how the two minerals have formed makes each specimen distinctly different.
